  • Quadcopter Build

    Lolol...This isn't a car...sorry, it's a quadcopter (helicopter with 4 rotors)...it's not a big human-sized one, it's RC...
Still I decided to post this because everyone likes a cool build...and because I have no one else to share this with

Anyways, this is a RC Quadcopter/Quadrotor...it's essentially a helicopter with 4 rotors...
Ever seen the AR Parrot Drone? That's a quadcopter...

I already started this project a week ago, but I'll post what happened...

    Friday, 2/10/12
Went to Home Depot and got bolts, nuts, washers, 3/4" PVC Pipe in 2' lengths, couplers, and aluminum sheet metal...

    Sorry no pictures...

    Sunday, 2/12/12
Package arrived with all mechanical parts...woo!!!

    Oooh...a package...

All the contents laid out on my desk...you can see my keyboard and mouse =D

    The Battery, 11.1V 3000mAh

Transmitter and Receiver on my flower bed XD

    6 Propellers, 3 CW, 3 CCW...10" diameter...

    4 ESCs...25A each...controls motor speed and power

What the propeller and motor should look like together...the motor may look really small and weak, but they spin up to 10K RPM and create a lot of wind...

    Monday, 2/13/12

Using my school's robotics and industrial arts room, I got a lot of things done quicker with the multitude of tools...

Cut off part of the PVC pipe to use as landing gear...

This is my mount that I thought of on attaching the motor to the frame...it's using computer motherboard standoffs and screws XD

This is what it should look like....

Now I have to do some soldering attaching the ESCs to the motors and then providing power to everything...

      Valentine's Day....didn't care because I'm single XD

Did a lot of soldering this day....I don't have a workbench or anything like that...
I had to use my garage floor, a spare piece of plexiglass as a flat surface, and all sitting under dim garage light....
I tried doing inside, but the fumes tripped the smoke detector...

This is the Power Spider I soldered up together...basically powers the ESCs from the battery...and keeps it all neat and organized...
Doesn't look like a spider to me though XD

This is the banana plugs soldered onto the ends of the ESCs connecting to the motors...they were a pain...
Soldering something so small on a garage floor in the cold is really hard...

This is what the finished look is supposed to be

I still have a lot to do, I have to mount the microcontroller, which is an Arduino Uno...
Also, I have to solder the Power Spider connections to the ESCs, and also solder a battery connection to the Arduino microcontroller...

After all mechanical is done, I have to program the Arduino, upload software, test, calibrate, and then fly....I hope I'm done by the end of the week...I think I can do it...

            Wednesday 2/15/12

I finished soldering everything I needed to solder...burned myself 3 times in the process...again soldering on the cold garage floor...
All I need to do is connect everything, upload software, calibrate, and then FLY!!!!

Hopefully I'll be done tomorrow or Friday....most likely Friday because I'm busy tomorrow...

Sorry for the bad quality...I was shaky because it's freezing inside the garage and the low-light room ruins it more...

Wouldn't the network connection suck up a lot of the battery?
You'd need maybe 2 batteries to keep it running for awhile..
