  • Ren-dog's new land boat

After searching and searching for a good manual car i finally gave up and settled for something that will be cheap to maintain, drive and repair. Something i know inside out and have had plenty of experience repairing.... A 2001 VX Commodore Sedan.
It has 160,000k's on it and is pretty much immaculate (bar a few visual flaws which will only require some elbow grease and the rocker cover gaskets [which he has provided, been working for the last couple of weeks]) It has been owned by some old bloke (Appears to be in his late 50's) and his wife, they had bought a new mazda3 and had no need for the commodore any more.

I paid $4250 for it after talking him down from $5000 (He had dropped the price from $6000 already and wasnt moving on price much).

So my planned mods which may take some time to do are as follows.
    Monaro style Headlights and Taillights
    Lukey Catback & Paper filter
    LSD
VY S II 17" Wheels (Mate has some he isnt using and will sell to me for $100 each)
The stereo system i have sitting in my room waiting for a new car

Apart from that i will just be repairing a few of the blemishes and keeping it running while i save to move out of this shit hole town.

I don't have any pictures yet as i am picking up the car this afternoon after the bloke has gotten the paperwork ready.

    Cheers for reading,
    Ren

Keen to see this! I've always liked Commodores, but I don't like the price of fuel and the bogan stigma that is attached to them.

I dont mind about the fuel econ, its still better than my liberty
But yes the bogan stigma was the main reason i was trying to not get one... but financially its my best option.

Its a grey with a hint of blue, so its a funny colour to look at but grows on you quickly. It has 15" mags which look chrome'ish... so they will be the first thing to go.

Just gotta wait another hour and a half.

If done right, these look really good and not bogan though. Keen to see what you do with it. What is the fuel economy like on it anyway? I'm too lazy to get on RedBook :-P

I'm go'en rite out 2 da durt rode 2 rap zum hektik zingl peggars!

fuel is apparently 8.5/100, So thats at least 2L better than the liberty hahaha.
            Another 45 minutes.....

This car is staying clean, it has a factory spoiler so thats staying on. Nothing stupid just fix it up to be as immaculate as i can get it and keep it to streets only, Maybe some time down the track do some suspension work (Sway bars etc) or brakes (HSV brakes are like $500 from the right place, so cheap) but thats about it. No body kits, no chrome, no chev badges (Perhaps a de-badge).

Keep it clean, and try to improve resale value with any mods I do.
Also have to figure out the cruise control... i turned it on then pressed a button then it accelerated up to 120 from 60... Auto's are quite scary after driving manual for the last 9 months.

Mods will not improve resale, you can't afford it so I really wouldn't touch the car. Please don't break this one too.

When i say mods i mean stuff like electric windows, creature comforts, things other people care about but don't bother me.

I'm gonna go straight out and put it into a tree sideways.

Yeah man, It'll go so hard it will rip my tapout shirt off!

Got the car, took it for a nice drive along the highway and around town (and through maccas) and it feels really nice, I think im just gonna make it comfy and classy. I dont think im gonna put an exhasut on it any more, its just such a nice cruiser.

Pics will come when I get around to it, hahaha (The bloke didnt wash it)

Looks in really good condition. Low Ks too. Nice pick up you got there. Would be a good cruiser.
Unlike the bogan spec ones I mostly see.

I'm going to fix the rocker cover gaskets in the next couple of days, install my stereo eventually (Bought the same subs i had in the mazda cause they were exactly what i wanted)... hopefully before i go to townsville, And fix up those few little bits that are annoying.

Insurance for this is only $260 for 12 months with Justcar (Car in my name, 19yo, and one fire damage claim) So thats easy taken care of.

Best part about this thing is the Cruise Control... Set it and forget it. "Hiya police cop! See im not speeding"

That looks really good man! Congrats on the new car.
Have you thought about putting the Holden VX S Pack front bar on it?
