Had to keep topping up the coolant, finally got around to finding the problem

That fat hose was split where the clamp goes...

So I cut off the split part and jammed it back on there

Nice. At least it wasn't the water pump. I've had to change mine over. Twice! It's not a hard job though. It's not behind the timing belt like on the a 323.

i highly recommend you replace the entire hose.
Check the top hose too, if it is bulging then you know it's time to replace it.
Here a reference. I only looked at the pics so i don't know if the text is correct but it will illustrate what im talking about.
        http://www.cdxetextbook.com/engines/...olanthose.html

Check all the hoses, if you find a good few of them defective replace all the lines on the engine and make a note of the date. This is good preventative maintenance. Absolutely make sure you run coolant.
the radiators in the XG's are unique to the car and its very difficult to get replacements so take good care of it. It's usually easier to adapt the radiator from another make car once the radiator goes.

These cars go well, Good luck ^.^

Yeah I will do the whole hose, maybe both, before xmas coz im going on a trip of about 3000k's over two weeks so want it in good shape. This is just a temporary fix until i can get into repco and order the bits and wait for them to show up.

Which top hose? this was the top one that goes into the radiator not the bottom, the pic is on a funny angle I guess.

Needs a full coolant flush too I have no idea what ratio its running at. I believe it should be 33% water to coolant...

            She's developed and heat problem!

I changed the hoses for new ones, flushed the coolant and added new stuff, new thermostat, new radiator cap, new water pump.... SO time for a new radiator. They are expensive new but I found a second hand one at a wrecker for $70 just have to pick it up this weekend and throw it in. Hopefully it will stop her overheating on these hot days.

Ok so I fixed the issue. It turned out to be the clutch on the thermo fan not kicking in full blast. I discovered this after replacing the ENTIRE cooling system including the radiator. But all up it only cost $200 for all of it, fan and radiator second hand from pick and payless and I get a discount at repco. My radiator looked pretty sad anyway and the one I scored at the wreckers looked brand new!

I did pretty much the same thing except I got a brand new rad from Natrad. $220.

My problem was that I didn't put the radiator cap on properly before driving in city traffic with air con on LOL!

                  well done!

Hold onto the old radiator if its salvageable just in case you need it one day.

The old rad looks pretty beat but I still have it, kept the old fan and stuff too. also made up a tool to get the fan off the waterpump easily so wont be such a pain in the ass next time.

Issues that have popped up now are the coolant level sensor needs to be replaced or cleaned and the heater seems to have stopped working, both not an issue right now lol

Ford's are also notorious for coolant thermostats going out as well, watch out for yours. The one on my car went out after 65,000 miles, and it was only 5 years old. Good thing it's easy to get to.

I'm planning on converting mine to thermo fans from an EL soon. Should help with the air con and keeping the temps low.

Take off the towbar before you dent your tailgate more!
I like this model though. Cool ute.

I've thought about doing this but last time I was at the wreckers I checked the size and the thermo fans off an EL wont fit on XG unfortunately, the front of the XG is a bit of a bastard child with bits from everywhere lol. But there is an aftermarket set available, maybe one day.

LOL yeah I noticed how close it sits when the tailgate is down, cant even fit my finger in between it.

Thanks! have you put any pics up of your apollo?

Been fiddling around with the ute a bit today, currently unemployed so bored out of my brains.

Pulled out the coolant level sensor, it was covered in sludge and cracked when I pulled it out coz it was so brittle and old. New one going in tomorrow. Also put my skid plate back on the front which I never got around to after doing the rad etc. Re-glued my rear view mirror after it fell off months ago while have fun on a bumpy dirt road... I had the canopy back on it for a camping trip where I slept in the back (was perfect) so also took that off and put in the shed.

Tomorrow I want to put in the new coolant level sensor and change the diff oil. Eventually I want to change the transmission oil but not sure how or if it needs a filter or anything in it but I will find out.
