  • My new project car - IDM as fck - Fiat 176

Here's my new set of wheels... 1998 Fiat Punto 176 (Mark 1)
Bought on 23/04/2013 and got it 40% towed and 60% driven home.

It was a bit of a struggle to get it home, but at the end of the day it was 180 euro and worth it. Pictures below kind of tell the story of it breaking down on the way down (due to a faulty alternator not charging the car battery), then towing it and having to leave it somewhere because it was too dark, rainy to keep going, especially with the almost dead battery - the lights on the Punto were dark and windscreen wipers barely moved.

After it has gotten home, so far:
    * Back seats, back seatbelts, back door panels, parcel shelf and some interior plastic bits have been removed (weight reduction)
    * It's completely de-badged now.
    * (in process of) removing back door handles and filling up the holes.
    * (in process of) rattle can paint job.

Lots more has still to be done.

    Took out the back seats,

...because race cars don't have back seats, it's as simple as that.

I've got a lot of work to do on this little beast, here's a start...

Taking out rear door handles and bogging up the holes.

What are your plans with it?
They told me I could be anything,
        so I became a nugget.

I do Range Rover, Volvo, Peugeot and Jaguar parts for Sydney. I can also help with VW, Honda and BMW parts.

First of all, getting both back door handle areas filled and smooth. Then I will give it an entire rattle can paint job. I will try refurbishing & re-spraying the alloys - will see how that goes. It'll need to be lowered. Lights and windows will need to be tinted. I'll get some nice speakers / subwoofers and design a wood box for them.

I'll need to replace the alternator so it charges the battery, and have a look at the steering wheel, it's a bit stiff.

It's my budget project car, so yeah...

Well good luck in your project.
I don't really like Puntos after my dad had ages of trouble with it.
ECU, Timing Belt, Head Gasket and Suspension. We paid up total of 1850€ and sold it for 800€.
Well but best of luck to your project and hope nothing like this happens to your one.
And be sure to check that ECU because my dad's friend who's a mechanic told us that Puntos have really bad ECU's and best if replaced.
Also Question! What color are you going to paint it? It really looks good in orange like this one (Just don't put an Unnecessary hood vent on it like this guy did lol)

Thanks mate. So far, the Punto's been great. Sorry to hear your dad's Punto had such problems.

Here's my progress... no door handle.

As you can see, it will be (matte) black, but a few things will be orangy-red, like alloys, side plastics and mirrors.

A Punto! Hehe... Man do these car fly when not faulty. You could get either the GT version body, the HGT kit (but this is from a later model so I don't know if it could fit or as the MCM motto goes "you make it fit"), or you could search for an Abarth kit. The GT kit should be the cheapest and the easiest to find.

                Cheers!

Just noticed it... You're missing the rear wiper.

this might be a stupid question...but how do you open the rear door from the outside? O.o am i missing something?

lol if you dont use them then it dont matter :0 but you can get door poppers to open them with a button

i had a 60 S when i was younger (3 doors though as i had no need for 5) bought it with a head gasket gone (fixed by dealer) replaced engine after bottom end went, and i think when i sold it the bottom end was on its way out again

ah well they dont call them Fix It Again Tomorrow for nothing

                      good luck with yours though

I'll have a look at some kits and see if I can find anything interesting. I'll finish the other door and paint the whole car first though.

Yes exactly, who the hell needs back doors? Especially since there are no back seats, which I have taken out. As you know from watching MCM, real race cars don't have back seats, it's as simple as that.

Door poppers sound interesting, I'll have a look at those too, possibly something I could do for the front doors. This actually is a 60 S Punto, I just hope it doesn't have any major problems.

What made you go for a Punto? Just like Fiats?
