Hey guys! there is a huge car meet I am going to tonight will be taking the Canon and taking pics and vids. Anyone over there want to see some American cars? I will make sure to get pics of them if you post them here

Used the wrong WB for these ones but can still get the idea with the low f stop, etc.

I kinda wanna get into photography. Used to do it with old black an white film in high school, but digital is so expensive. Although I never really liked messing with all the chemicals and fumbling around in the dark winding film onto holders, so digital has that going for it. What would you guys suggest as a basic beginner digital SLR that can be easily had second hand? Keep in mind there are a lot of photo students at RIT so I am guessing the second hand camera market is quite good.

I can tell you this from experience, Kodak is only a shell of It's former self. Over the past 15 years there have been so many layoffs at their main site in Rochester.

I got it for free back then and it was 12mp so it took decent pictures. Now I have a Canon SX30IS that is incredible.

My dad used to work at Kodak up until the late 1990's. They actually used to have a lot of competitive technology and were early innovators in digital photography. Unfortunately, they clung to film too long and payed for it in the end. Anyone remember the advanced photo system? That was pretty much the end for Kodak.

I was going to say, I don't follow the industry much but I figure Digital Cameras were Kodak's demise. It's a little like how Online Movie sales/rentals and eBooks are killing off retail stores like Blockbuster, Borders, etc. Kodak enjoyed a great reputation, and their epertise earned them that - but when it came to Digital, they were in a brand new ball game on a level playing field. Infact, they may have been disadvantaged from the beginning with other manufacturers having more expertise and r&d in the realm of electronics (Canon as a notable example).

Same with computer hard drives. Dominated by Seagate, Western Digital, and a fair bit of involvement from other brands such as Hitachi and Samsung. But now with Solid-Sate Drive technology building up a lot of momentum, those companies are afforted very little head start. Companies with experience in solid state memory products such as USB drives, CF/Flash cards, and RAM modules had the head start - and were quick to learn, develop, invest and push SSD products to the market, leaving Seagate, WD etc in their dust. I'm not sure of the state of things now but a couple years ago Intel actually had the best SSD's out, and in part due to their involvement with the development of new standards, the chipsets the SSD's communicate with, as well as their experience iwth memory, and even just circuit/chip design overall, put them ahead of manufactuerers whose knowledge and skill lie in mechanical, magnetic media.

It's also happening in the phone market. Nokia was huge. Their business model of "we've got the right phone to you" worked. Smart phones were never really much chop and most people didn't bother with them. Apple brought out the iPhone, which put ants in everyone's pants and brought good to a "one size fits all" product and successfully implemented concepts others failed at (such as apps, updates, and a decent touch screen). RIM (Blackberry) stepped up their game, and Google brought out Android, a bandwagon brands like Samsung and HTC aggressively propelled. Now Nokia's business model is failing, their products and software are inferior, and they're heading for troubled times.

A bit of a shame really, especially when none of these companies made necessarily poor products after their hey-day. They just had to compete with very, very fierce competition.

They actually had some great digital cameras quite long before digital cameras hit it big. We still have an old DC-120 ans DC-240 laying around from the 90's. Well over 10 years old and they still work flawlessly. The DC-240 was one of the first consumer cameras over 1 megapixel. (if i recall correctly, this was some time ago ) The problem was they were new technology unfamiliar to consumers and expensive compared to film and so didn't sell well, so they sat on the back burner while Kodak kept doing film. They also had quite a large research lab (my dad used to work in the scientific imaging systems lab).

Edit: A quick google search reveals that Kodak still supports their old digital cameras, even releasing updated firmware. That takes dedication to support electronics that old.

Yep I still have an old Kodak DC-120 1 Megapixel digital camera... it's about the same size as our handheld VHS camera lol.

Kodak wasn't just great in the 90's, they played a big role in the pioneering of cameras and photography waaay back before the 1900's. (Did photography in High-School )

Hard Drives will be around for a long time yet, consumer electronics moves quickly but corporate clients and businesses are very very very stingey and will cling to their old equipment until it almost destroys their business.
