I've taken these photos with a point and shoot. I took these when I was crazy noob, but if you understand compositions and framing and whatnot, you can take a decent shot.

Anyone know some simple settings i can adjust to get a good photo (like a style of photo).
This is probably the lamest advice you'll get, but in my opinion one of the most practical and usable. Because in using a DSLR there are so much different settings to adjust it makes using them so much more complicated. But they are there for a reason, there are plenty of different factors that affects the quality of your photo and the biggest one that I can think of is lighting. You have all those controls and settings there to give you control on how the picture will come out. Different lighting will need a different setting. So one setting will not necessarily work on the next photo if there is a difference in lighting. So in the end after saying all of that, my suggestion IS TO READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL OF YOUR CAMERA. I know it is lame. But it worked great for me. I don't have any formal education on photography just read the manual of my Nikon D3100 and watched a number of videos on youtube and browse through some magazines and after that I have been able to take pictures that are in my opinion pretty good or decent. With regards to the speedlight, I find that I don't really use them when I go outside, I only tend to use them for indoors. Don't know if this will help but I sure hope it does. =D
