  • I'm BACK! Finally....

    Afternoon!
    Some of you may remember me;
    I was one of the top posters on the MCM forums before "The great forum crash".
    I was extremely disheartened to lose tens of thousands of posts; so I kind of tapped out for a while... Few years as it turns out!

    I've been in the MCM scene forever;
    The boys kept me going while I was legally blind; I lost all confidence in myself and their attitude of 'we suck, but we're going to try!' was super key to getting me my confidence back. I didn't need to be good right away, just...have a go!

    I helped traffic control and crowd manage the first official MCM Qld meet at Queensland Raceway.
    That was one HOT AS DAY! Sunburn was had by all.

    May as well share 2 stories from that event; Its an intro afterall:

    I managed to save Marty's old wagon from a rancid milk bath!
    Funny story, I'm sure he thought I was just a crazed fan, I wonder if he remembers?
    In his rush to get on the track, in addition to almost collapsing the tent when he untied it from his rim; he had failed to notice the two melted fraps he\Moog left on his dashboard.
    I quickly opened the passenger door as he was about to speed off, suppressed a chuckle at the HORRIFIED look on Martys face wondering WTF this guy was doing; before saying "You're about to get a milk bath if you hit the track, can I bin those for you?" ... "Oh.... yeah... Thanks!" as a wave of relief seemed to wash over him :P NOT a nutter, just saving Subarus, one milk based beverage at a time.

    I also brought the boys OJ at that meet, because Moog jokingly 'ordered it' on these forums; and I follow through on my jokes :P
    Moogs response was golden; "I was joking dude... but... you have no idea how much I want an OJ right now!", and again, had to reassure Marty; "It's OK, he's not weird, I asked him to!"

    Good times, I miss those days....

    I'm a huge oil nerd, I'll discuss blends and viscosity vs clearances all day.
    I'm a Network Engineer by trade, with a passion in security, and I work for a Charity, which is super fulfilling.
    If this forum ever needs additional moderation; I'd apply.

    Hopefully I can rebuild my 'cred' in these parts, chances are I have something to say on most matters :P
    Perhaps some even remember me?

    in truth I think I need some more socializing in this scary time, as I'm not a facebook-er, so I'm a little isolated.

    Are you using the same display picture? it looks familiar.

    Marty pops into the forums every now and then, but most of the noobs just use Facebook now. I hope one day people will come back here. we still have lots of info.

      I spent a lot of time discussing with Jenga about trying to reverse engineer his stock ECU for boost; managed to find the original developer on IRC, but he had none of the assembly files I'm sure, even 20 years later he'd have considered it immoral to share them even if he did.


      Other than that I spent hours discussing Kseries, and EJ's, my mate owned a subaru workshop in Brisbane, so I'm thrilled to say that over the years I've managed to get my hands dirty PROPERLY; rebuilding many a shitbox, including building a forged EJ from scratch.

      Since I spent 3 years blind, I got really into audio tuning, and building affordable but smooth systems; another passion for sure, I'm that guy with 'golden ears'; other senses really do fill-in when you lose one. I can usually tune to within about 5% of 'Flat', then tweak from there.
      Quite proud of that skill; all my mates say I should start charging $20 for audio tunes, because right now I've done 10's upon 10's of them for free.

      Good to be back though; while not exposed to anyone these last 2 months (had an oldschool flu), all this new social distancing isn't super fun for my psyche;
      I normally socialise every night with the Brisbane car scene; not anymore, not till they find a therapeutic treatment that works.
      I don't need a vaccine, I just need assurance that 99% of people who come down with a 'bad case' of sickness can be prevented from getting pneumonia or spesis. THEN I'll go out again...

        I thought so, I do seem to remember it. I'm not a massive facebook user myself but I do post occasionally. I prefer forums like this for updating progress blogs etc. it's impossible to find things on Facebook with its complex algorithms.

        Yeah some people are funny like that, I used to help test things for the PSP back in the day. I've got the (still unreleased) PSP Go 6.10 CFW/HEN proof of concept saved somewhere on my old desktop PC. Kind of wish i'd stuck at programming etc. but cars got in the way.

        If you don't mind me asking, how did you go blind? Have you got most of your sight back? I've got astigmatism which makes driving at night... interesting. Also means I can't wear contact lenses when working on the car because they'll rotate and go out of focus...

        I've been forced to work from home. Most of my job is surveying schools for installing Audio-Visual network and IT/Network/WiFi upgrades. Schools are closing so I've got about 1-2 weeks worth of work then I'm kind of stuck...

        Car scene here in Scotland is shit, I do think it's partially to do with weather. "show season" as the scene kids with VAGs on bags say.

        My username used to have my name in it "Martin" but people kept sending me pms thinking I was Marty lol I guess the administrator title was throwing them off.

          I agree, it's a waste of our collected knowedge; people share how to do a thing, then in a week, it's lost forever.
          It's a bad idea, especially in the car scene where in 10 years time, we may need the info (like marty found, in T&T2 when he found his own old how-to's for the march 'ufo')

          My cousin used to be an engine programmer for Krome Studios; I had access to dev source code which was super fun.
          He also programmed the mods that let you run your own songs on GuitarHero1, and play custom songs from USB in dance games.

          I have most of my sight back while I'm wearing hard lenses; yes, otherwise I'm still blind (legally).

            oh yeah I've heard of that, so you could still see colours and things? That's good you can see with lenses. I've got normal glasses for my astigmatism, I just can't wear contact lenses when I'm welding

            The muscle that controls my lens is really lazy. There are some days (really sunny days and first thing in the morning) where I don't need to wear glasses at all.

            I found Martys how-to on the Micra forums when I was looking for an AMR500 supercharger a few years ago. Can't remember his username. It is funny how he found his old thread on how to clean the very valve he was trying to replace. followed his own guide and fixed it!

            I was going to experiment with my Bosch Moronic 4.4 ECU in my volvo, but I sold it. I've still got the bin files for the ECU. there's a wiki dedicated to that ECU as it's unique to the Volvo 850.

                Even with the mask, my eyes get dry very easily. There's no really a reason for me not to use them

                  None at all; the whole 'contacts stick to your eye' is a myth.
                  ESPECIALLY stories of it removing the pupil; what happened to the epithelium layer? The Stroma? The Cornea?

                  Infrared\UV light isn't drying unless it's heating; so if you can handle the heat, you're not drying anything more than usual.
                  If it was a concern, you'd be unable to go in the sun with contacts; and aircon? Or a Rave\Disco where they use blacklighting?! killer! lol

                      Well that explains why my old account was MIA I knew I had one but I haven't logged in for about 4-5 years and I couldn't recover it, which means I also missed the forums crashing.

                      Cool stories though, I really enjoy hearing about things that aren't in the videos. Also if you know a bit about the k-series motors you might be interested to know that I'm working on swapping a k20a3 into a 85 fiero, its also good to know that there will be some people that have some decent knowledge on the kseries motors here. granted my project is pretty unique and I'm going an odd way about it because I find it easy.

                        Are you in the USA where fieros are common? Or are you from somewhere else (like Aussie) where they're a rare collectors car?

                        Yeah I know a decent chunk about the K's, been messing with them for like 11 years.
                        To be fair, so little goes wrong, that I probably know the equivalent to 3 years of subaru owners:EJ's (of which I am also one).

                        Weren't the original fiero engines Iron block? You'll be severely changing the weight distribution (probably for the better).

                          I'm in the USA and honestly I've only ever seen one that was being driven around, and it was my coworker at autozone that owned it. I've seen more Lamborghini's and mr2's which are also very rare.

                          From what I remember from working at autozone I rarely saw people come in the Hondas other than for brakes and oil. Same with Toyota but after owning a corolla and a Prius that both consumed oil badly with only 100k miles on them I don't like them anymore. and Nissian owners always came in for crankshaft sensors. which left me chosing a JDM honda motor because american motors cost more(probably because the JDM market is saturated with too many engines) and only come with the oil pan, block and head.

                          ya the original engine in the fiero is called the iron duke, and it weighs 400 lbs (181 kg) so i'll be losing about 200 lbs (90 kg) with the honda engine in there so it should from a 43.5 : 56.5 weight distribution to a 47.5 : 52.5 . sadly I won't really know how much of a difference that it makes I never got to drive the car in its natural state I bought it for 300$ (486.54 aud) with a seized engine. but I'm pretty sure a 2200 lb (998 kg) car with 160 hp should make a fun little go kart.
