  • Installing Sparco Hood Pins DIY

    Tools Needed:

    - Hood pin assembly.
    - Philpshead screwdriver.
    - Drill and various size bits.
    - Die grinder.
    - Adjustable wrench.

    -
    First you want to make sure you hood pin assembly has come with all it's hardware. This includes the 2 pins and bases, 6 screws, 4 washers and 4 nuts.

    Now you want to look for a good mounting spot on the cross bar. This is important because you don't want the pin coming through the hood on a slope.

    I used 2 holes that where already there. This way the holes were already aligned. I did have to use a drill to increase the holes to fit the bolts but nothing major. I left 2 1/2 in of the bolt sticking up as a rough estimate. Only hand tighten the nuts as you will have to make many adjustments to the height and angle still.

    Now you want to lay a drop cloth or somethign to that extent over your engine bay to help keep metal shaving out of it.

    You want to take some grease or any kind of marking liquid and place it on the top of each bolt. I used silver-grade anti-sieze.

    After you do this, lay the hood down on top of the pins so that the liquid marks the underside of the hood for drilling.

    Then i used a 3/8 drill bit and drilled a hole through the underside of the hood ONLY. Remember to drill slowly because once the bit grabs the underside of the hood, it will move very very quickly. Remember, DO NOT drill all the way through the hood.

      Once your first hole is drilled you can either continue to use a larger drill bit or do like i did and used a die grinder. You need to increase the size of the opening so that the pin fits through it without any restrictions.

      Once you get to this point, set your tools down and walk away.
      You want to really think about the next step.

      Because once you go through the top layer of the hood, there is no turning back.

      Mark the top of the pins again to mark the top layer of carbon fiber. Then take a 1/8 drill bit to drill and pilot hole.

      After the first hole is drilled, you need to increase the size to fit the pin through. I recommend using a die grinder as it is more percise.

        You don't want to push the hood alway the way down, just until the latch catches. You will be doing alot of adjusting here with the height of the pin.

        Now put the base on but do not screw it down. This is where you will spend the most time on height or angel adjustments. If one pin is angeled slightly off you can always push or pull it by hand to get it to line up correctly.

        Tape the base to the hood so you can then check to make sure that the pin doesn't catch on the base's opening while opening or closing the hood.

        Once the base is lined up where you want it, use a 1/8 drill bit and drill the holes for the 3 screws. You can go bigger but i prefer to use a 1/8 this way the screws go where i want them too and they still have plenty of bite once they're fully installed.

        Now that the base is screwed into the hood, double check to make sure the pins still line up with the opening. The pin should move somewhat freely but still have slight resistance when in the locked position.

        After driving it for a few days, double check to make sure your pins still allow the hood to open without restriction.

                Nice guide man, if only I had this about 2 years ago when I spent quite a lot of time messing around with an angle grinder trying to get mine to work properly. Dont' worry they work fine now.
